Cindy Sanyu Cites Lack of Government Support as Major Barrier to International Success

The global explosion of African music has turned the international spotlight onto the continent, yet Ugandan music still struggles to establish a dominant, border-crossing presence compared to its West and South African counterparts. According to dancehall icon and president of the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA), Cinderella Sanyu—popularly known as Cindy—the missing link isn't a lack of talent; it is a critical deficit of government backing.

In a series of candid industry assessments, "The King Herself" made it clear that without systematic state structures and financial investment, Ugandan artists are playing a losing game on the global stage.

Cindy points out that international breakthroughs require massive financial muscle, strategic diplomatic positioning, and structural infrastructure—elements that individual Ugandan musicians are forced to fund entirely out of pocket.

"When you look at countries like Nigeria or South Africa, their governments actively push their culture export," Cindy explained. "They provide grants, back massive cultural festivals, and create policies that force global streaming platforms and media houses to take them seriously. In Uganda, artists are fighting solo."

Without this high-level institutional push, Ugandan creatives face steep bottlenecks:

  • Stiff Financial Barriers: Funding high-end music videos, international media tours, and aggressive digital marketing campaigns requires capital that local performance revenues alone cannot sustain.

  • Diplomatic and Travel Friction: Navigating international visas, performance permits, and cross-border logistics remains a nightmare for local creatives without state-facilitated cultural exchange frameworks.
