The internal deadlock within the Najjanankumbi-based party is breaking, and there are now concerns that it may be too late to save it.

Hajj Latif Ssebagala, a member of the NUP and a former congressman for Kawempe North, claims that the Democratic Party, which in 2020 saw a significant exodus of members to the NUP, endured the similar fate. He asserted that the FDC’s current state is “beyond repair” and that the party now faces the same danger.

In a television appearance, Ssebagala advised against spending time and resources trying to regain control and instead advising that it is preferable to accept that the FDC chapter has shut down and cannot be revived.

They must accept that their party is over just as our futile attempts to fix the DP were to do the same. It is now extinct. The smartest course of action for those in Katonga is to admit that their party is lost and join us to jointly boost our troops and chart the course forward,” he said.

The FDC group led by Col. Besigye elected Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to serve as president and Francis Mwijukye as secretary general this week, succeeding Patrick Amuriat and Nathan Nandala Mafabi, respectively. This was the turning point in the FDC’s internal power struggle.

The long-simmering unrest inside the FDC erupted in July when Dr. Besigye, Chairman Wasswa Biriggwa, and Spokesperson Semujju Nganda claimed that the party leadership had accepted “dirty money” from President Yoweri Museveni.

After this week’s delegate conference, according to Col. Besigye’s media statement, they would try to retake the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi.

Lord Mayor Lukwago later affirmed this and intimated that the Amuriat group might not even be in control of the land title for the party’s office space.
